As a Staff Data Scientist at BP PLC, you will apply your expertise in data science to drive strategic insights and inform critical business decisions across various functions. You will be responsible for end-to-end data science initiatives, from data acquisition and preparation to model development, deployment, and interpretation, ultimately contributing to BP's success.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Leads the design, build, evaluation and continuous improvement of machine learning and AI solutions into scalable, reliable and secure production systems. Owns the adoption of industry trends, guidelines and insights, continuously improving bp’s AI strategy.

  • Owns the commercial impact of AI solutions, balancing performance, cost, and scalability to deliver measurable business value. Acts as a trusted partner to business interested parties, influencing how problems are framed and translating complex and ambiguous business requirements into measurably impactful AI solutions .

  • Employs broad and in-depth technical & business understanding to deliver impactful AI & machine learning solutions at scale. Independently finds opportunities to generalize AI and machine learning solutions (e.g. agentic patterns, evaluation pipelines, logging & monitoring systems, etc.) into reusable components that accelerate delivery at program level .

  • Owns the technical direction for modelling, evaluation, prompt engineering, and system design for ST&S-wide programs; Acts as a force-multiplier, setting higher standard on data science & engineering quality, reproducibility, and observability of AI solutions

  • Apply advanced statistical and machine learning techniques to extract actionable insights from large and complex datasets.

  • Develop compelling data visualizations and interpret findings to communicate insights effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Collaborate with business units to understand data domain knowledge and align data strategy with organizational goals.

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of data governance policies and guidelines.

  • Proactively identify and source new data opportunities to enhance analytical capabilities and inform critical initiatives.

  • Participate in group problem-solving sessions, bringing a data-centric perspective to complex challenges.

  • Ensure adherence to digital security protocols and data privacy regulations throughout all data science activities.
     

Job Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated strong commercial savvy, with the ability to link data insights to business value and strategic outcomes.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present complex technical information clearly and concisely.

  • Proven expertise in data analysis, including statistical modeling, machine learning, and predictive analytics.

  • Extensive experience with data cleansing and transformation techniques.

  • In-depth knowledge of various data domains relevant to the energy industry.

  • Proficiency in data integration and ETL processes, using various tools and technologies.

  • Strong understanding of data management principles and best practices.

  • Expert-level skills in data manipulation using programming languages (e.g., Python, R) and SQL.

  • Experience with data sourcing strategies and techniques.

  • Solid understanding of data strategy and governance frameworks.

  • Expertise in data visualization and interpretation using tools like Tableau, Power BI, or similar.

  • Awareness of digital security best practices in data handling and storage.

  • Strong collaborative and group problem-solving abilities.
